Miss Mary McDonough

Mary McDonough died peacefully, June 28, 2001 at Adirondack Tri-County Health Care Center, North Creek, NY. Born in Rosemount, Minnesota she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Pearl McDonough. She was a 1925 graduate of the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minnesota and received her Masters degree from Columbia University in 1936. From 1928 to 1932 she taught high school English in Eden Valley, MN. From 1932 to 1935 she taught in Casselton, North Dakota. Mary was a Fullbright Teaching Fellow in Greece from 1952 to 1954 where she taught English. From 1958 to 1960 she was part of the AID teaching project in Ibaban, Nigeria and received an appreciation Certificate from the Nigerian Government in 1960. Mary was Chairman of the English Department for Pearl River High School, Pearl River, NY from 1938 to 1967. She was a lifelong member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society Internaitonal, an international society of key women educators (Zeta Chapter). She was also a member of the New York State English Council, the National Council of English Teachers, past President of the Rockland County English Teachers and an Honorary Life member of the NY PTA. Mary was a born traveler and enjoyed numerous cross county trips to visit her brother's family in California. She preferred to travel by car and train on these trips, to see the country. In addition, she traveled the world extensively, crossing the oceans by steamship. She was predeceased by one brother, Joe McDonough who died September 1987. Survivors include one sister, Marguerite Jersey of Indian Lake, a sister in law, Vera McDonough of Woodside, California; nephews, Joe McDonough and his wife Chico of Tokyo, Japan, Michael McDonough and his wife Shelley of New Castle, California, Terence McDonough and his wife Yuko of Kobe, Japan, Brian McDonough and his wife Sarah of McNary, Arizona; niece, Patricia McDonough and her husband James Patrick of Woodside, California; her grandnieces and grandnephew, Grace Patrick, Matthew and Brooke McDonough.
